Seat Leon >> Removing and installing a wheel
Proceed with changing the wheel only after loosening all wheel nuts slightly while on the ground and safely raising the vehicle with the factory jack.
When removing or fitting the heavy wheel assembly, the rim can easily knock against and damage the exposed brake disc rotor. Take extra care during handling, and consider having a second person assist you to steady the wheel.
Taking off the wheel
- Unscrew all loosened wheel nuts completely using the wheel wrench and place them on a clean, grit-free surface so their threads stay free of dirt.
- Carefully pull the wheel straight off the hub face and set it aside safely.
Putting on the spare wheel
Before mounting, check the sidewall for any directional arrows to confirm the correct rotation direction of the replacement tyre.
- Lift and align the spare wheel or compact temporary spare onto the hub mounting pilot.
- Thread in the wheel nuts by hand, then snug them up lightly in a criss-cross pattern using the wheel wrench to center the wheel against the hub.
- Use the dedicated anti-theft key adapter to screw in and hand-tighten the security wheel nut.
- Carefully crank the jack to lower your Seat Leon until all four tyres rest firmly back on the ground.
- Use the factory wheel wrench to fully tighten all wheel nuts turning clockwise. Work in a diagonal criss-cross sequence across opposite pairs rather than turning consecutively in a circle.
- Reinstall the protective wheel nut caps, hub cover, or full-face decorative wheel trim.
Tightening torque of the wheel nuts
The specified tightening torque for the wheel nuts on alloy rims fitted to your Seat Leon is 140 Nm.
Immediately after changing a wheel, have the bolt tightening torque verified with a calibrated torque wrench at an authorized workshop or service station.
All wheel nuts must be kept clean, uncorroded, and turn smoothly by hand onto the hub studs.
Before mounting the spare wheel, inspect the structural condition of the wheel rim and the flat mounting surfaces on both the wheel back and hub face.
These contact surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned of dirt, corrosion, and debris before seating the replacement wheel.
Prior to checking final tightening torque, replace any rusted or binding wheel nuts that cannot be turned smoothly by hand, and clean any accumulated dirt or oxide out of the hub threads.
Never apply grease, anti-seize compounds, or oil to the wheel nuts or hub mounting threads. Even if tightened to the required 140 Nm torque value, lubricated fasteners can back off unexpectedly while driving.
Tyres with directional tread pattern
Tyres featuring a directional tread pattern are engineered to channel water and maximize road grip when rolling in one specific forward direction. A prominent directional arrow embossed on the tyre sidewall indicates the mandatory rotation direction. Always align directional tyres correctly to ensure maximum wet traction, prevent severe aquaplaning in standing water, and reduce road noise and premature rubber wear on your Seat Leon.
If an emergency forces you to mount a directional spare tyre in reverse rotation, drive with extreme care as wet grip and hydroplaning resistance will be compromised. This reduction in performance is especially pronounced on wet or slippery road surfaces. Have the tyre remounted in the proper rolling direction at the earliest opportunity.
Works after changing a wheel
- Refit the center hub caps or individual wheel nut protective covers depending on your trim level.
- Return the jack, wheel wrench, and anti-theft adapter key securely to their dedicated foam tray in the boot.
- If the damaged full-sized road wheel does not fit in the underfloor spare wheel recess, secure it safely inside the main luggage compartment using luggage straps.
- Check the cold inflation pressure of the newly mounted spare tyre at the nearest service station as soon as possible.
- On models equipped with a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), adjust the cold tyre pressures to specification and save the updated baseline values in the infotainment menu.
- Have the tightening torque of all wheel nuts checked with a precision torque wrench at the earliest opportunity, driving cautiously in the interim.
- Have the damaged standard tyre repaired or replaced by a tyre specialist as quickly as possible so you can return to a full-size road setup.
