Seat Leon >> Instructions for tow-starting and towing

During a towing maneuver, a change of driving direction can still be clearly signalled on the towed Seat Leon even when the hazard warning lights are actively switched on. To accomplish this, simply operate the turn signal lever as normal while the ignition remains switched on. During this brief operational window, the hazard warning lights will be temporarily disconnected.

As soon as the turn signal lever is returned to its neutral central position, the hazard warning lights will be automatically reactivated by the vehicle system.

Cases where tow starting and towing the vehicle are not permitted

Never allow your Seat Leon to be towed under any of the following hazardous circumstances:

  • The vehicle's gearbox or transmission is mechanically damaged or lacks proper internal lubricant.
  • The 12-volt battery is completely discharged and dead. In vehicle versions equipped with the "Keyless Access" locking and ignition system, the steering column remains mechanically locked, the electronic parking brake cannot be disengaged, and the steering lock cannot be released if the electrical power is cut off.
  • If a towing distance greater than 50 km needs to be covered.
  • If there is any doubt or lack of guarantee that the wheels will rotate smoothly or that the steering mechanism will function properly following an accident.

If your Seat Leon cannot be towed safely on its own wheels due to any of the aforementioned reasons, immediately request professional assistance from specialized personnel and, if necessary, have the vehicle transported on a flatbed tow truck with all wheels lifted completely off the ground.

Tow start

Steps to be taken prior to tow starting

For vehicles equipped with an automatic gearbox: Due to fundamental technical design limitations, tow starting the vehicle is strictly prohibited and not allowed. Always attempt to start the engine using an auxiliary jump-starting aid instead.

For vehicles with a manual gearbox: In general, tow starting is discouraged. If the engine fails to run, try utilizing a starting aid first. Please note that for petrol engine variants, the absolute maximum permitted distance for tow starting is limited to 50 m.

  • Secure the flexible tow cable or rigid tow bar exclusively to the factory-provided attachment points designed specifically for this purpose.
  • Switch on the vehicle ignition and activate the hazard warning lights.
  • Engage 2nd or 3rd gear while the vehicle is completely stationary.
  • Depress the clutch pedal fully and hold it down.
  • Once both vehicles are moving forward, release the clutch pedal smoothly.
  • As soon as the engine catches and fires up, immediately depress the clutch pedal again and disengage the gear to prevent colliding with the towing vehicle ahead.

NOTICE When tow-starting a vehicle, unburnt fuel can flood into the exhaust system and enter the catalytic converter, causing permanent thermal and chemical damage.
