Seat Leon >> Trailer loading
Technically permissible maximum trailer weight and vertical load on the coupling device
The technically permissible maximum trailer weight represents the absolute maximum mass that your Seat Leon is engineered and certified to tow. Conversely, the vertical load on the coupling device refers to the downward static force exerted vertically from above onto the tow ball of the towing bracket by the trailer drawbar.
The technical ratings regarding maximum trailer weight and vertical coupling load stamped onto the manufacturer type plate of the towing bracket are general reference values only. The exact official figures applicable to your specific vehicle configuration—which may occasionally be lower than the general bracket maximums—are listed explicitly in your vehicle's registration documentation. The specifications detailed in your official vehicle paperwork take precedence at all times.
To promote optimal handling stability and active safety while driving, SEAT recommends utilizing the maximum permissible vertical load on the coupling device as fully as possible. Operating with an insufficient vertical drawbar load negatively impacts the tracking behavior, steering response, and stability of both the towing vehicle and the trailer.
The vertical load on the tow ball increases the physical weight borne by the rear axle of your Seat Leon, which consequently reduces the remaining available cargo carrying capacity inside the vehicle itself.
Gross combination weight of the towing vehicle and trailer
The gross combination weight is defined as the actual combined total mass of the fully loaded towing vehicle plus the actual operating weight of the hitched, loaded trailer.
Because trailers are classified into various legal categories across different countries and regions, SEAT recommends consulting a specialized workshop or authorized dealership to determine which trailer class and configuration are best suited for your vehicle.
Trailer loading
The total weight distribution between the towing vehicle and the attached trailer must be properly balanced. To achieve this, the cargo load inside the trailer should be arranged so that it creates a vertical force as close as possible to the maximum permitted coupling load, while being distributed evenly across the front and rear of the trailer:
- Distribute cargo items within the trailer so that heavy objects are positioned directly over or as close as humanly possible to the trailer axle.
- Always secure all trailer cargo properly using appropriate lashing straps or tie-down belts.
Tyre pressure
Adjust and set the tire pressures on the trailer wheels strictly in accordance with the specifications and recommendations provided by the trailer manufacturer.
When towing a trailer with your Seat Leon, you must inflate the tires of the towing vehicle to their maximum allowable pressure rating to compensate for the increased load and maintain handling precision.
WARNING If the maximum permissible axle load limits, the maximum technically permissible vertical load on the tow ball coupling point, the maximum authorized vehicle weight, or the gross combination weight of the towing vehicle and trailer are exceeded, catastrophic vehicle instability, severe accidents, and serious personal injuries may occur.
- Never exceed any of the indicated weight limits and ratings.
- The actual static weight resting on the front and rear axles must never exceed the maximum permissible axle weight ratings specified for your Seat Leon. Furthermore, the combined axle loads must never exceed the maximum authorized gross vehicle weight limit.
WARNING An improper shift in weight distribution or shifting cargo inside the trailer can severely jeopardize the directional stability and active safety of the towing vehicle and trailer combination, potentially leading to dangerous sway events, loss of control, accidents, and serious injuries.
- Always load the trailer correctly and methodically.
- Always secure all cargo items firmly using high-strength retaining belts, ratchet straps, or cargo nets that are appropriate for the load and in sound, undamaged condition.
