Seat Leon >> Driving with a trailer

Adjusting the headlights

When a heavy trailer is hitched, the rear of your Seat Leon is compressed, causing the front part of the vehicle to lift slightly. This upward shift can alter the headlight beam angle and inadvertently dazzle oncoming traffic or drivers ahead of you.

Specific features of driving with a trailer

  • If your trailer is equipped with an overrun inertia brake system, apply the brakes gently at first and then firmly and rapidly. This progressive technique prevents sudden jerking and jolting caused by the mechanical locking of the trailer wheels.
  • Due to the massive gross combination weight of the loaded towing vehicle and trailer together, the overall braking distance increases significantly.
  • Utilize engine braking when descending steep hills or long mountain gradients.

Failing to do so can cause the friction brake system to overheat, fade, and potentially fail.

    • Vehicles equipped with an automatic gearbox: Switch to Tiptronic mode and manually select a lower gear.
    • Vehicles equipped with a manual gearbox: Shift down into a lower gear early.
  • The added trailer weight, along with the combined mass of the vehicle and trailer train, alters the vehicle's center of gravity and dynamic handling properties.
  • If the towing vehicle is running empty while the trailer is heavily loaded, the overall weight distribution becomes highly unbalanced.

Under these unfavorable conditions, you must drive slowly and with exceptional caution.

Hill starts with a trailer

Depending on the steepness of the slope and the combined gross weight of the towing vehicle and trailer, your Seat Leon might experience slight roll-back when attempting to pull away from a standstill on an incline.

To perform a smooth hill start with a trailer hitched:

  • Press and hold down the foot brake pedal firmly.
  • Press the Seat Leon electronic parking brake switch control button button to release the electronic parking brake.
  • Manual gearbox models: Depress the clutch pedal fully to the floor and engage 1st gear.

Automatic gearbox models: Move the gear selector lever into the D/S driving position.

  • Pull out and hold the Seat Leon electronic parking brake pull switch button in that position to hold both the towing vehicle and the trailer securely with the electronic parking brake.
  • Release the foot brake pedal.
  • Begin moving off slowly.

Manual transmission models: release the clutch pedal gradually and smoothly.

  • Do not release the Seat Leon electronic parking brake pull switch control handle button until the engine develops sufficient pulling power to start driving forward without rolling back.

WARNING If a trailer is towed incorrectly or handled without due care, it can lead to a dangerous loss of vehicle control, severe accidents, and serious personal injuries.

  • Driving with a trailer and transporting heavy or bulky cargo fundamentally alters the steering response, chassis behavior, and braking distances of your Seat Leon.
  • Always drive with heightened caution and foresight.

Begin braking much earlier than you normally would under standard driving conditions.

  • Continuously adapt your driving speed and style to suit prevailing visibility, weather conditions, road surface quality, and traffic density. Slow down significantly, especially when navigating down steep hills or descending long mountain grades.
  • Accelerate with particular care and caution.

Avoid aggressive braking, sudden steering inputs, and abrupt evasive maneuvers.

  • Exercise extreme care when overtaking other road users. Reduce your speed immediately if you notice the trailer beginning to sway or oscillate, no matter how slightly.
  • Never attempt to straighten out a swaying towing vehicle and trailer combination by accelerating harshly.
  • Always comply strictly with statutory speed limits designated for vehicles towing trailers, as they are frequently lower than general highway speed limits.
