Warnings about fitting a child seat

Keep the following fundamental safety guidelines in mind whenever installing a child restraint system inside your Seat Leon. These general warnings apply to all child seat configurations, regardless of their specific mounting system or fastening mechanism.

  • Always carefully read and adhere to the installation and operating instructions provided directly by the child seat manufacturer.
  • Whenever possible, fit the child safety seat to the rear seat position behind the front passenger so that children can enter and exit the vehicle safely on the pavement side away from moving traffic.
  • Adjust the height routing of the vehicle seat belt so that it lies across the child restraint naturally without binding or twisting.

Always select the lowest setting on the seat belt height adjuster when securing rear-facing child seats with the standard three-point safety belt.

  • To ensure proper clearance for a rear-facing child seat installed on the back bench, adjust the front seat backrest so that it makes zero contact with the child restraint. For forward-facing child seats, position the front seat backrest forward enough to prevent the child's feet from touching it.
  • To achieve a flush and stable fit of the child seat base against the rear backrest, adjust or temporarily remove the rear headrest so that it does not push against the upper frame of the child seat.
  • If installing a semi-universal child seat that relies on a floor support leg combined with the vehicle seat belt, never place it on the center rear seat position. The floor hump in the center reduces floor clearance, preventing the support leg from resting securely to maintain adequate seat stability.

Important information about the front passenger airbag

A prominent warning sticker displaying crucial safety information regarding front passenger airbag operation is affixed directly to the passenger sun visor and on the passenger-side B-pillar door frame ››› Fig. 38.

Make sure to read and observe all safety instructions detailed in the corresponding manual chapters:

  • Maintaining a safe distance relative to the front passenger airbag unit.
  • Keeping the physical deployment path between the passenger and front airbag clear of objects.

When active, the front passenger airbag presents a severe hazard to an infant traveling in a rear-facing child seat. Deployment of the airbag cushion can strike the child seat frame with immense force, leading to severe or fatal trauma. Children under 12 years of age should always be transported safely on the rear seats of your Seat Leon.

For this reason, we strongly advise securing children on the rear seats, which represent the safest area inside the vehicle. If you must use the front passenger seat, you must manually disable the front passenger airbag using the integrated key switch before securing the child seat. Always select a child restraint system specifically matched to the height, age, and weight of the child.

DANGER

  • Mounting a child restraint system on the front passenger seat significantly increases the risk of critical or fatal injuries to the child during a collision.
  • An inflating front passenger airbag can strike a child seat with extreme force, hurling the entire seat against the inner door trim, vehicle roof, or seat backrest.
  • Never install a rear-facing child seat on the front passenger seat unless the front passenger airbag has been manually deactivated. Failure to do so creates a severe, potentially fatal risk for the child! If installing a rear-facing seat in the front is unavoidable, deactivating the passenger airbag is mandatory.
  • For model variants that do not come equipped with a key-operated airbag deactivation switch, the vehicle must be taken to an authorized technical service center to perform software adjustment. Always remember to reactivate the airbag system when an adult occupant resumes sitting in the front passenger seat.
  • Never permit a child to travel in the vehicle without being properly secured in a restraint system, and never allow them to stand up or kneel on the seat cushions while driving.

In a collision or hard braking maneuver, an unrestrained child can be thrown violently through the cabin, causing fatal injuries to themselves and other passengers inside the Seat Leon.

  • Never leave a child unattended inside a child safety seat or alone within the vehicle cabin under any circumstances.
  • Children shorter than 1.50 m (4 feet 11 inches) must not use the standard vehicle seat belts alone without a suitable child seat or booster cushion, as sudden braking forces can cause severe neck and abdominal injuries.
  • Whenever mounting a child seat on the rear bench, always engage the mechanical child safety locks on the rear doors to prevent accidental opening from the inside.
