Seat Leon >> Tread wear indicators

Fig. 245 Tyre profile: tread wear indicators.

Fig. 246 Swapping tyres.
Integrated wear indicators measuring approximately 1.6 mm in height are molded into the base of the main tread grooves on original equipment tyres. Spaced at regular intervals around the perimeter, these raised rubber bars run transversely across the tread pattern ››› Fig. 245. To help locate them easily, the letters "TWI" or small triangular symbols are embossed along the tyre sidewall directly aligned with each indicator position.
When the tread wears down level with these raised bars, the legal minimum tread depth has been reached across the tyre face. At this point, the worn tyres must be replaced with new ones immediately to maintain safe road contact.
If you prefer a sportier driving style in your Seat Leon, check tread depth more frequently—ideally every 5,000 to 10,000 km (3,000 to 6,000 miles). When measuring tread depth, inspect all wear indicators located across every major circumferential groove on each wheel.
Changing wheels around
To promote uniform tread wear across all four positions, rotate the wheels regularly between the front and rear axles according to the rotation scheme shown in ››› Fig. 246. Periodic wheel rotation helps balance front-to-rear wear rates, extending the total operational life of the entire tyre set on your Seat Leon so all four tyres reach end-of-life at roughly the same time.
WARNING Tyres must be replaced immediately once the tread face wears down to the level of the tread wear indicators. Continuing to drive on fully worn tyres creates an immediate hazard and can lead to severe accidents.
- Deep tread depth is critical when driving in hazardous weather conditions such as heavy rain, slush, or ice. Maintaining ample tread depth that is balanced equally between the front and rear axles ensures predictable vehicle stability.
- Inadequate tread depth compromises active vehicle safety, severely impairing overall handling control. The risk of aquaplaning increases dramatically when encountering standing water or deep puddles, while cornering grip drops sharply and emergency stopping distances are extended.
- Driving speeds must always be adjusted to match reduced tread conditions; failing to slow down under worn-tyre conditions increases the risk of losing complete control of your Seat Leon.
