Seat Leon >> Checking and topping up the engine oil level
Checking the oil level in vehicles with a dipstick

Fig. 238 Engine oil dipstick.
- Zone A: Do not top up oil under any circumstances.
- Zone B: You can add oil, but keep the level within this acceptable operating zone.
- Zone C: The engine oil level is critically low. Add appropriate oil up into zone B.
Before opening the front bonnet of your Seat Leon, carefully read and observe all safety warnings outlined in the section covering working inside the engine compartment.
The physical engine oil dipstick provides a direct indication of the liquid oil volume remaining in the sump.
- Park your vehicle securely on a flat, horizontal ground surface.
- Briefly run the engine at idle speed until it reaches normal operating temperature, then switch the ignition off.
- Wait for approximately two minutes to allow the oil to drain back down into the oil pan.
- Locate the engine oil dipstick in the engine bay. It can be easily recognized by its brightly colored upper handle ring.
- Pull out the dipstick completely. Wipe the metal blade clean with a lint-free cloth and insert it back into the guide tube, pushing it inward as far as it will go.
- Withdraw the dipstick once more and check the oil residue mark against the scale ››› Fig. 238. Top up with approved engine oil if necessary.
The oil mark should settle clearly between zones A and C. It must never exceed or rise above zone A.
Checking the oil level on the digital display on vehicles without a dipstick

Fig. 239 On the infotainment system screen:
possible engine oil level indicator displays.
- Overfilled: Do not top up engine oil.
- Normal: Engine oil level is in the normal operating range.
- Low: Engine oil level is low; engine oil must be topped up soon.
- Very low: Engine oil level is extremely low; engine oil needs to be topped up immediately.
To check the current oil level digitally on the vehicle information screen, follow these simple operational steps: 1. Switch the vehicle ignition on.
2. Navigate and select the menu path:
Vehicle > Status > Oil level.
Recommended actions corresponding to the oil level reading shown on the information screen ››› Fig. 239:
- Do not top up engine oil, do not start the engine, and seek professional technical assistance immediately.
- Oil level is correct and optimal.
- Oil level is low; engine oil must be topped up.
- Oil level is below the minimum threshold; engine oil must be topped up promptly.
If the oil level indicator sits in the lower portion of zone B or reaches down into zone C, you can top up the system by adding approximately half a liter (about 0.5 l). Alternatively, follow any specific guidance provided directly on the vehicle information screen.
Topping up engine oil

Fig. 240 Oil filler cap cover in the engine
compartment.
- Locate the engine oil filler cap under the bonnet of your Seat Leon. It can be easily recognized by the dedicated oil drop symbol
stamped on the cover ››› Fig. 240. - Unscrew and remove the cap from the oil filler neck opening ››› Fig. 240.
- Carefully pour in fresh oil in small, controlled quantities (no more than 0.5 l at a time).
- To avoid overfilling and adding too much oil, wait approximately 2 minutes after each addition for the fluid to settle, then recheck the oil level using the dipstick or digital display.
- If necessary, add a small amount more.
- Once the oil level reaches at least the acceptable operating threshold ››› Fig. 238 B, carefully screw the engine oil filler cap back on and tighten it securely.
WARNING Any maintenance work carried out inside the engine compartment or directly on the engine of your Seat Leon must be executed with extreme caution and vigilance.
- When working in the engine bay, always observe all established safety warnings and operational guidelines.
WARNING Engine oil is a highly inflammable fluid! Ensure that no oil spills or comes into contact with hot exhaust manifolds or engine components when performing a top-up.
NOTICE If the verified oil level rises above zone A (overfilled), do not start the engine. Operating an overfilled engine can result in severe damage to internal mechanical components and the catalytic converter. Contact an authorized Technical Service workshop immediately.
For the sake of the environment
Under no circumstances should the engine oil level exceed zone A. If overfilled, excess oil can be drawn into the crankcase breather system and escape into the atmosphere via the exhaust system, causing severe environmental pollution.
Note Before embarking on a long trip, we highly recommend acquiring a bottle of engine oil that conforms to the corresponding VW specifications and keeping it securely stored in your Seat Leon. This ensures that the correct grade of engine oil is always readily available for a top-up if needed during your journey.
