Seat Leon >> Main beam assist (Light Assist)
The intelligent main beam assist system on your Seat Leon automatically prevents glare from affecting oncoming vehicles traveling in the opposite direction or preceding vehicles driving ahead in the same direction.
In addition, the main beam assist detects illuminated urban areas and streetlights, and automatically disconnects the high-beam headlights when passing through populated towns and cities.
Within its engineering limitations, this driver assistance system automatically connects or disconnects the high-beam headlights depending on prevailing environmental and traffic conditions, as well as your current driving speed.
Advanced main beam assistant (LED Matrix)
The advanced main beam assistant provides maximum illumination of the road surface and road shoulders on your Seat Leon.
At the same time, it actively prevents dazzling drivers of vehicles ahead or oncoming traffic.
The system uses a front camera to detect other road users and selectively deactivates specific individual areas within the light beam distribution. If the advanced system cannot avoid dazzling other road users for any reason, the high beam is switched off completely.
The advanced main beam assistant reliably recognizes illuminated areas such as city centers and deactivates the high beam while driving through them.
Within the operational limits of the system, the assistant automatically switches the high beam on or off depending on surrounding ambient conditions, traffic dynamics, and driving speed.
The advanced main beam assistant can be enabled or disabled easily in the vehicle settings menu of the Infotainment System.
Switching on the main beam
assist or
advanced main beam assist (Matrix LED)
- Switch on the engine ignition and select automatic mode
on the main headlight control panel ››› Fig. 104. - From the neutral resting position, push the steering column turn signal and high beam headlamp lever forward ››› Fig. 105 3.
When the main beam assist is active, the green
control indicator lamp
on the digital instrument
cluster display
turns on. When the high beam headlights are actively illuminated, the
standard blue main beam control lamp
on the
instrument
cluster display switches on.
Switching off the main beam assistant or advanced main beam assistant (LED Matrix)
- Switch off automatic mode
on the principal
headlight switch panel ››› Fig. 104. - EITHER: if main beam assist is currently active, pull the turn signal light and main beam headlights stalk lever back toward you ››› Fig. 105 4.
- OR: if the main beam assistant is enabled, but the high beam does not turn on automatically, press the turn signal and main beam lever forward to force the high beam on manually. Pull the turn signal and main beam lever back again to switch off the high beam manually, whenever necessary.
- OR: simply switch off the engine ignition.
System limitations
Despite its advanced technology, there are specific driving scenarios and environmental conditions where the main beam headlights on your Seat Leon must be switched off manually, because the automated main beam assist system may fail to disconnect them in time or might not disconnect them at all:
- When driving on poorly lit roads featuring highly reflective road signs or directional markers.
- If other road users ahead or nearby have inadequate lighting, such as unlit pedestrians or cyclists.
- When negotiating sharp, tight curves where oncoming traffic is partially hidden, or when driving on pronounced road inclines or steep downward slopes.
- On multi-lane highways with opposing traffic separated by a central concrete barrier or divider, where elevated drivers (such as lorry truck drivers) can see across into your lane.
- In adverse weather conditions involving thick fog, heavy snowfall, or torrential rainfall.
- In swirling dust storms, heavy sand, or airborne debris.
- If the front windscreen is cracked, chipped, or damaged directly within the optical field of vision of the camera.
- If the windscreen camera's field of view is misted over with condensation, caked with road dirt, or obstructed by a parking sticker, snow, or ice.
- If the front camera unit itself is physically damaged or if its electrical power supply has been interrupted.
WARNING The convenience features of the main beam assist system must never encourage you to take driving risks or lower your guard. The system is designed purely as an aid and is never a replacement for active driver concentration and road awareness.
- You must always retain full responsibility for controlling the main beam headlights yourself and actively adapt them to changing lighting, visibility, and road traffic conditions.
- The automated main beam regulator may occasionally fail to recognise complex driving situations correctly and can operate with technical limitations under certain circumstances.
- Whenever the forward-facing camera's field of view is dirty, covered, obscured, or damaged, the correct operation of the main beam regulator will be impaired. This restriction also applies if the vehicle's exterior lighting installation is modified unlawfully, such as when unauthorized additional auxiliary headlamps are fitted.
WARNING To avoid negatively affecting the operation and reliability of the assistant system, please take the following practical points into careful consideration:
- Clean the exterior windscreen glass in front of the camera's field of vision regularly and make sure it remains completely free of accumulated snow, mud, and ice during winter months.
- Never place decals, toll tags, or objects that cover the field of vision of the camera on the glass.
- Regularly check that the windscreen glass is undamaged in the critical area directly surrounding the camera's field of view.
Note
- The manual headlight flasher can be engaged and disengaged manually at any time simply by operating the steering column turn signal and main beam lever.
- If there are luminous objects or glowing devices emitting light inside the interior cabin within the camera's upward line of sight—such as a portable navigation screen or illuminated dashboard gadgets—this glare may interfere with the optical operation of the Seat Leon main beam assist system.
