Seat Leon Sportstourer Easy Open sensor zones and kicking motion diagram for hands-free tailgate operation
Fig. 83 Rear lid with sensor-controlled opening (Easy Open).

If an authorized vehicle key is detected in the immediate vicinity of the rear bumper, you can unlock and open or close the tailgate of your Seat Leon Sportstourer completely hands-free by making a deliberate kicking movement in the sensor area positioned beneath the rear bumper panel.

  • Switch the engine ignition off completely before attempting the gesture.
  • Stand directly facing the middle section of the rear bumper.
  • In a smooth, fluid motion, swing your foot and lower leg forward as close as possible to the bumper area.

The upper part of your shin needs to pass close to the upper sensor zone while your foot sweeps through the lower sensor detection zone ››› Fig. 83 1.

  • Quickly pull your foot and lower leg back away from the bumper sensor fields ››› Fig. 83 2. The electric rear lid will begin opening automatically.
  • If the rear lid does not react or fails to open, pause briefly and repeat the sequence after a couple of seconds. The lower sensor field may not have registered the initial motion properly.

Closing the tailgate is just as straightforward—a similar kicking motion under the bumper triggers the automatic closing sequence, provided a valid key remains nearby in the rear detection perimeter.

Once fully closed, the rear lid locks automatically if the vehicle was locked prior to opening and no valid key has been left inside the cargo area.

If you need to halt the powered tailgate while it is moving (during either opening or closing), simply perform another kicking motion under the bumper while standing close with the key.

Keep in mind that the Easy Open function may be unavailable or work inconsistently under certain environmental conditions, such as:

  • When the rear bumper housing or sensor surfaces are heavily coated with dirt or mud.
  • When the bumper area is wet with road salt residue, slush, or covered in thick snow and ice.
  • If an aftermarket towing bracket has been installed on the vehicle.

During heavy rain downpours, the Easy Open sensor system might respond slightly slower or temporarily disable itself to prevent accidental triggering when water cascades over the bumper sensors.

You can toggle the Easy Open feature on or off permanently via the infotainment touchscreen by navigating through Seat Leon infotainment menu button icon for vehicle setup > Vehicle > Exterior > Easy Open.

Note Disabling the main Keyless Access system automatically deactivates the hands-free Easy Open tailgate feature as well, even if the option still appears as "active" inside the vehicle menu setup.

CAUTION If a valid key is located close to the rear bumper of your Seat Leon Sportstourer, the Easy Open feature can be triggered unintentionally. This can happen while sweeping near the back of the car, directing a pressure washer or steam cleaner at the rear bumper, or while performing maintenance work around the exhaust and lower trim. An unexpected tailgate opening can cause personal injury or scratch the paint against overhead obstacles.

  • Always keep any spare or active vehicle keys out of range when working around the tailgate area.
  • Disable the Easy Open feature in the infotainment system before starting any repair or maintenance work on the vehicle.
  • Deactivate Easy Open through the vehicle settings menu prior to taking the car through an automatic car wash or pressure washing it manually.
  • Turn off the Easy Open function before mounting a bicycle rack or hitching a trailer to the towbar.
