Seat Leon >> Introduction
Valid for: hybrid vehicles
Before initiating any charging sequence, verify that the hybrid drive system is switched off completely and ensure that both the charging cable and surrounding infrastructure are in flawless mechanical and electrical condition.
Types of charging
Your vehicle supports the following charging methods depending on available equipment and power infrastructure:
- Charging with alternating current (AC) at a public charging station or dedicated home wallbox:
Provides higher charging power capabilities. The maximum charge rate achieved depends on the specification of the public station or home wallbox, the rating of the connecting cable, and the maximum capacity of your vehicle's onboard charger.
- Charging with alternating current (AC) using a standard domestic household socket:
The home electrical installation and socket must be inspected by a qualified electrician to ensure proper grounding and wiring integrity. Due to the high capacity of the high-voltage battery pack and the limited power output of standard domestic outlets, completing a full charge via this method requires over 20 hours (or approximately 8 hours, depending on regional electrical grid standards and vehicle specifications).
- Charging with direct current (DC) at a high-power fast charging station:
Represents the fastest charging method available, substantially reducing total replenishment time. When utilizing DC fast charging regularly, review the specialized guidelines regarding frequent high-power direct current charging to optimize battery longevity.
Protection against current leakage
Your Seat Leon features an integrated direct current (DC) residual leakage protection mechanism. This safety system prevents potential DC fault currents occurring during a charging session from feeding back through the charging cable into the building's main electrical installation.
WARNING Charging the high-voltage battery improperly, ignoring essential electrical safety precautions, or misusing high-voltage charging equipment can result in electrical short circuits, severe shocks, explosions, structural fires, severe thermal burns, and fatal injuries.
- Always follow the exact sequence of charging steps to eliminate the risk of electric shock or physical injury caused by residual voltage remaining within the charging circuit.
- Strictly observe all safety guidelines and operational instructions provided in the manual for the charging cable supplied with your Seat Leon.
- Only connect the charging equipment to correctly installed, grounded, and undamaged power outlets connected to a certified electrical network. Building electrical systems and dedicated charging sockets should be inspected regularly by a qualified electrician.
- Never connect or charge the vehicle in environments where explosive gas, dust, or flammable vapors may be present. Switching actions within the charging cable control unit can generate electrical sparks, potentially igniting surrounding flammable atmospheres.
- Keep all electrical plugs, charging pins, and cable connectors dry, protecting them from rain, splashing water, or moisture ingress.
- For safety reasons, never perform maintenance, washing, or repair work on your Seat Leon while a charging session is actively in progress.
- Always terminate the active charging process officially via the vehicle or charging station before disconnecting the plug from the wall outlet or charging point. Unplugging under electrical load can create electrical arcing, damaging the cable connector and building outlet.
WARNING Driving your vehicle with a severely depleted high-voltage battery state of charge increases the risk of the car unexpectedly stalling in active traffic, which can result in dangerous roadway collisions, severe physical injuries, or catastrophic vehicle damage.
NOTICE Fast charging via direct current (DC) channels extremely high levels of electrical power into the vehicle. Frequent reliance on high-output DC fast charging can accelerate chemical aging and permanently diminish the maximum energy storage capacity of the high-voltage battery over time.
- For routine daily operation, the high-voltage battery should preferably be recharged using alternating current (AC) supplied from a dedicated public charging point or a certified domestic home wallbox.
NOTICE While a charging session is actively underway, never rest, loop, or wind the charging cable over the open charging socket flap, as the weight and tension could bend, crack, or permanently damage the assembly.
Note
- When replenishing the high-voltage battery using alternating current (AC), SEAT recommends utilizing a dedicated home wallbox or public AC station configured for maximum supported charging power. Operating at maximum AC capacity provides substantially higher energy efficiency compared to charging via a standard domestic wall outlet.
- Review the precise technical specifications regarding the maximum AC onboard charging capacity of your Seat Leon. For detailed information on compatible charging hardware, contact an authorized SEAT dealer.
- The high-voltage battery can only accept charges from public or private charging stations that comply with relevant regional electrical regulations and fulfill at least one of the following international technical standards:
- IEC 61851 and IEC 62196 (applicable across European countries).
- ISO 15118 (parts -1, -2, -3 governing vehicle-to-grid communications).
- SAE J1772 (applicable in North American markets, including the USA and Mexico).
- Under extreme environmental conditions—such as severe sub-zero cold or intense high ambient heat—the battery thermal management system may temporarily restrict or throttle the maximum allowable charging speed of the high-voltage battery.
