Seat Leon >> Airbag activation

The airbags in your Seat Leon deploy with extreme rapidity—within thousandths of a second—to deliver vital supplemental protection during a severe accident. A fine, smoke-like non-toxic dust may become visible in the cabin when the airbag modules deploy.

This phenomenon is completely normal and does not indicate a fire or electrical fault inside the vehicle.

The supplemental airbag restraint system is only operationally active and ready to function when the vehicle ignition is switched on.

In complex collision scenarios, multiple airbag units may deploy simultaneously to safeguard cabin occupants.

During minor frontal impacts, minor side collisions, rear-end shunts, or vehicle rollovers, airbags do not deploy unnecessarily.

In plug-in hybrid variants of your Seat Leon, airbags are designed to activate if the vehicle rolls over.

Activation factors

The exact physical conditions and thresholds that trigger the airbag system cannot be generalized for every driving accident.

Several critical variables dictate deployment, including the physical properties and deformability of the obstacle struck (hard versus soft), the precise impact angle, and the vehicle's travel speed.

The vehicle's deceleration trajectory is the primary determinant for airbag activation.

The electronic control unit constantly analyzes real-time collision trajectory data and triggers the appropriate restraint modules.

If the deceleration rate experienced during an impact remains below the predefined reference value programmed into the control unit software, the airbags will not deploy, even if the collision causes extensive external bodywork damage to the car.

The following airbags are triggered in serious head-on collisions:

  • Driver front airbag.
  • Front passenger airbag.
  • Driver knee airbag unit.
  • Curtain head airbags.

In the event of serious side collisions, some (or all) of the following airbags can be activated (depending on the severity of the collision):

  • Curtain (head) airbag on the impact side of the vehicle.
  • Front side thorax airbag on the impact side.
  • Rear side airbag on the impact side.
  • Central front airbag.

In an accident with airbag activation:

  • interior cabin lights switch on automatically (provided the interior light switch is set to the courtesy door position);
  • hazard warning flashers turn on to alert surrounding traffic;
  • all vehicle doors are automatically unlocked for easy evacuation;
  • the fuel supply to the engine is cut off instantly;
  • in hybrid vehicle models, the high-voltage electrical powertrain system is safely shut down;
  • an automated emergency rescue call is initiated.
