Seat Leon >> Why is it so important to wear a seat belt and to sit correctly?

SEAT Leon (4th Generation, KL; 2020+) Owner’s Manual / Safety / Airbag system / Why is it so important to wear a seat belt and to sit correctly?

For the rapidly inflating airbags in your Seat Leon to achieve their maximum protective potential, vehicle occupants must always wear their safety belts properly and maintain an ergonomically correct seating posture at all times.

The supplemental airbag restraint system is by no means a substitute for seat belts, but rather an integral component of the vehicle's overall passive safety architecture. Please keep in mind that the airbag network can only function effectively when all cabin occupants wear their seat belts correctly and adjust their headrests properly. Therefore, it is essential to fasten your seat belt securely before every journey, not only because it is legally mandated in most countries, but fundamentally for your own personal protection.

An airbag deploys in a fraction of a second with immense force; if an occupant is seated incorrectly when the system triggers, the deployment can inflict critical or fatal physical injuries. Consequently, it is vital that everyone traveling inside the vehicle assumes an upright and correct sitting position for the duration of the trip.

Abrupt, hard braking immediately prior to a collision can throw an unbelted passenger violently forward into the deployment zone of an active airbag.

In such scenarios, the unfolding airbag strikes the unbelted occupant with high velocity, causing severe or even fatal trauma. This danger applies equally to adults and children.

Always maintain the greatest possible physical distance between your upper body and the front airbag housing. This ensures that the front airbags have adequate space to deploy fully when triggered, delivering optimal protection.

The primary factors determining whether and when airbags are deployed include the specific nature of the accident, the angle of impact, and the vehicle's travel speed.

Whether the airbag modules activate depends primarily on the rate of vehicle deceleration resulting from the collision, which is continuously measured by the electronic control unit. If the deceleration forces generated during an impact and registered by the sensors remain below the programmed reference thresholds, the front, side, and curtain airbags will not deploy. It is important to remember that the extent of visible bodywork damage on a vehicle involved in an accident—no matter how severe it appears—is never the factor that determines whether the airbags trigger.

WARNING Wearing a seat belt incorrectly or adopting an incorrect seating position can result in critical or fatal injuries during an accident.

  • All vehicle occupants, especially children, who are not securely and correctly restrained risk sustaining severe or fatal injuries if an airbag deploys. Children up to 12 years of age must always travel seated properly in the rear of the vehicle. Never transport children unrestrained or using a restraint system unsuited to their height, age, or weight.
  • To minimize the risk of injury from a deploying airbag, always wear your seat belt correctly adjusted across the pelvis and chest.
