Seat Leon >> PreCrash system

How it works

The PreCrash system in your Seat Leon is an advanced active safety assistance system that triggers a sequence of preventative measures to protect vehicle occupants in high-risk driving scenarios, though it cannot physically prevent an impending collision.

It functions at full capacity only when no specialized custom drive profiles impairing its features are active and when there are no underlying system operating anomalies.

Basic features

Depending on regional market regulations and the specific equipment fitted to your Seat Leon, the system evaluates dynamic driving parameters. In critical situations (such as emergency braking applications or a sudden loss of vehicle control), the following protective measures can activate individually or simultaneously at speeds exceeding approximately 30 km/h (20 mph):

  • Reversible pre-tensioning of all fastened front seat belts.
  • Automatic activation of the hazard warning lights to alert trailing traffic.
  • Automatic closing of all power windows, leaving only a narrow ventilation gap, as well as closing the panoramic sunroof (depending on equipment).
  • In vehicle rollover scenarios, activation of the pyrotechnic seat belt tensioners (depending on equipment).

Depending on how critical the immediate driving situation is evaluated to be, the front seat belts are pre-tensioned either individually or both at the same time.

In addition to Front Assist

In vehicles equipped with Front Assist, system sensors continuously assess collision risks with vehicles ahead within design parameters. The protective PreCrash measures may also trigger automatically if a high probability of a severe frontal crash or rear-end collision is calculated, or during emergency intervention phases of Front Assist.

In addition to Side Assist

In vehicles fitted with Side Assist, radar sensors monitor traffic approaching from behind the vehicle within system limits. If an impending rear-end collision is calculated as highly likely, the PreCrash functions engage instantly. In this specific scenario, the hazard warning lights flash at a higher frequency to warn the approaching driver.

In addition to the Emergency Assist system

In vehicles featuring Emergency Assist, driver steering input and attentiveness are continuously monitored within functional bounds. The following PreCrash protection steps activate if complete driver inactivity is detected:

  • Reversible seat belt tensioning applied directly to the driver's seat belt.
  • Automatic window closing leaving only a tiny gap, along with closing the sunroof depending on vehicle specification.

Activating the PreCrash system

The PreCrash system can be partially deactivated by disabling the traction control (TCS) or stability control (ESC) systems through the vehicle settings menu, depending on fitted features.

When these core safety control systems are active (which is the default state every time the ignition is turned on), the PreCrash system remains fully operational.

Drive profile selection settings

In vehicles equipped with Drive Profile Selection, the PreCrash response characteristics automatically adapt to match the dynamic parameters of the active profile.

Limited operation

The PreCrash system is unavailable or operates with limited capability under the following circumstances:

  • When traction control (TCS) is manually switched off.
  • When driving the vehicle in reverse gear.
  • When the central airbag control unit detects an internal operational fault.
  • When a functional fault is present within the PreCrash system itself, the ESC module, or Front Assist.

Troubleshooting

If the PreCrash system experiences a malfunction, a permanent warning message such as "System unavailable" or "System with limited functions" appears on the instrument cluster display. Have your Seat Leon inspected promptly by an authorized SEAT Official Service partner.

WARNING The PreCrash system cannot override the physical laws of nature and operates strictly within technical system boundaries. You should never take unnecessary driving risks based on the presence of this safety feature. The system does not replace attentive driving habits and cannot prevent collisions on its own.

  • Always adjust your speed and follow distance relative to preceding vehicles to match ambient visibility, weather, road surface, and traffic conditions.
  • The radar and camera sensors are not always capable of detecting every potential obstacle in the vehicle's path.
  • The system may fail to react to pedestrians, animals, or crossing objects that are difficult for the sensors to track.
  • Metallic structures (such as guardrails or fences), roadside elements, or severe weather conditions can interfere with sensor performance and degrade risk detection accuracy.
  • Never ignore warning lamps or error messages displayed on the instrument cluster.

WARNING Driver distraction while operating vehicle controls can cause severe accidents and physical injuries.

  • Never attempt to modify complex system settings on the central Infotainment touchscreen while the vehicle is in motion.
