Seat belts offer their maximum protection during an accident and substantially reduce the risk of sustaining critical or fatal injuries only when they are positioned with absolute precision. Furthermore, when the belt webbing is routed correctly, it keeps vehicle occupants restrained in the optimal position required for supplemental airbags to deploy effectively. For this reason, seat belts must always be worn with the webbing correctly aligned.

Incorrectly worn seat belts can cause severe or even fatal injuries, as detailed in the occupant seating guidelines.

  • The diagonal shoulder section of the seat belt must rest squarely across the center of your collarbone and shoulder, never slipping across your neck, resting over your upper arm, routed underneath your arm, or pulled behind your back.
  • The lap section of the seat belt must lie low and snug across the rigid pelvic bones, never riding up across the soft abdomen.
  • The entire seat belt must lie completely flat against your body and fit comfortably.

Pull the upper shoulder strap tight if necessary to remove any accumulated slack.

For pregnant occupants, the seat belt should pass smoothly and uniformly across the center of the chest and as low as possible across the pelvic region, with the lap strap kept completely flat so that it exerts zero direct pressure down upon the abdomen. This safe positioning must be maintained throughout all stages of pregnancy ››› Fig. 25.

Adapting the position of the belt webbing to your size

The routing height of the front seat belts in your Seat Leon can be easily customized by adjusting the height of the front seats.

WARNING An incorrectly worn seat belt webbing configuration can lead to catastrophic, severe, or fatal injuries in the event of an accident.

  • The shoulder portion of the seat belt must always lie across the center of the shoulder, never running beneath the armpit or cutting across the neck.
  • The seat belt must rest flat against the body and fit snugly across the upper torso.
  • The lap belt must be positioned low across the pelvis, never across the stomach. The belt webbing must remain flat and fit securely against the pelvic bone structure. Pull the belt tight to take up any slack.
  • For pregnant women, the lap strap must be routed as low as possible across the hips and pelvis, resting flat and curving naturally around the abdomen without applying pressure ››› Fig. 25.
  • Never allow the seat belt webbing to become twisted while fastened.
  • Once the seat belt is properly adjusted and buckled, never pull it away from your torso with your hand.
  • Never position the seat belt over hard, rigid, or fragile objects carried in your clothing, such as eyeglasses, pens, or keys.
  • Never use aftermarket seat belt clips, locking clamps, or unauthorized anchoring devices to alter the natural fit of the belt webbing.

Note If a specific physical condition or disability prevents you from maintaining the correct position of the seat belt webbing, consult a specialized technical workshop for professional assistance regarding approved special adapter devices to ensure optimum safety protection from your seat belt and airbag system.
