Seat Leon >> Technical requirements

Vehicles that are factory-equipped with a towing bracket meet all the necessary technical, structural, and legal requirements for safe driving with a trailer.

If your Seat Leon is retrofitted with a tow bracket afterward, only a bracket that is officially authorised for the maximum authorised load of the trailer being towed may be installed. The towing bracket must be fully compatible with both the vehicle and the trailer and must be securely anchored to the vehicle's chassis structure. Only use a towing bracket that has been authorised by SEAT for this specific vehicle model. Always review and strictly observe the towing bracket manufacturer's fitting instructions.

Towing bracket fitted on the bumper

Never fit a towing bracket directly to the bumper or to the structural area where the bumper is mounted. The towing bracket must not impair or restrict the designed energy-absorbing function of the bumper. Do not make any unauthorized modifications, welds, or repairs to the vehicle's exhaust system or hydraulic brake system.

Perform routine checks at regular intervals to ensure that all mounting bolts and connections of the towing bracket remain completely secure and tight.

Engine cooling system

Driving with a connected trailer increases the thermal and mechanical load on the vehicle's engine and cooling system. The cooling system must be maintained with sufficient coolant levels and be fully prepared to handle the additional cooling demands involved when towing a trailer.

Trailer brakes

If your trailer is equipped with its own independent braking system, please ensure you comply with all relevant legal requirements and safety standards.

Never under any circumstances connect the trailer's hydraulic or pneumatic brake system directly to the vehicle's brake system circuits.

Tow cable

Always connect an approved breakaway cable or safety tether between the towing vehicle and the trailer before setting off.

Trailer tail lights

The lighting system and tail lights on the trailer must comply fully with statutory safety regulations and local traffic laws.

Never connect the trailer's tail lights or wiring harness directly into the vehicle's internal rear lighting electrical circuits. If you are uncertain whether the trailer's electrical socket connection is wired correctly, have it inspected and tested by a qualified specialized workshop.

SEAT recommends visiting an authorized SEAT dealership for professional electrical assistance and diagnostics.

Exterior mirrors

If you cannot clearly monitor the traffic area directly behind and beside the trailer using the standard exterior mirrors of your Seat Leon, auxiliary extension mirrors must be installed in accordance with the regulatory standards of the country in question. All exterior mirrors should be properly adjusted before you begin driving and must provide an unobstructed, sufficient field of rear visibility.

WARNING If the towing bracket is fitted incorrectly, poorly bolted, or is unsuited for the vehicle, the trailer could break loose and become completely detached from the vehicle while in motion, causing catastrophic accidents and severe personal injury.

NOTICE

  • If the tail lights and wiring of the trailer are not connected correctly to the designated control module, the sensitive electronics and control units of your Seat Leon may suffer permanent damage.
  • If the trailer draws excessive electrical current beyond rated limits, the vehicle's onboard electrical system and fuses can be damaged.
  • Never tap into or connect the trailer's electrical system directly to the wiring harness of the rear tail lights or unauthorized power sources. Only use the dedicated, factory-intended trailer socket connections designed for supplying electric current to a trailer.
