Seat Leon >> Over-the-air update

Introduction

Over-the-air updates allow you to always keep your Seat Leon up to date, for example for optimising vehicle functions, updating map data, and providing essential malware protection.

How can you find out when an over-the-air update is available?

Newly available software updates are automatically retrieved and displayed right on your vehicle's central infotainment system screen.

If multiple software updates are available for your Seat Leon at the same time, one over-the-air update must first be successfully completed and installed before the next one can be initiated.

Note Over-the-air updates require your vehicle's data connectivity and online services to be fully enabled and active.

It is in your own best interest to complete software updates as soon as possible after notification. If a vehicle control unit repeatedly rejects an over-the-air update package, it will be necessary to visit a qualified workshop for manual diagnosis and flashing. SEAT recommends using an authorized SEAT dealer for this service.

WARNING In very rare electronic instances, a vehicle control unit may malfunction or fail to function properly following an over-the-air update installation.

Unexpected malfunctioning of a critical control unit and the vehicle while driving can lead to serious accidents and fatal injuries.

  • Reduce your driving speed in a controlled, safe manner if your Seat Leon behaves, operates, or reacts differently than usual while out on the road.
  • Pull over safely and contact a specialized workshop immediately. SEAT recommends using an authorized SEAT dealership.

WARNING If the digital instrument cluster fails or stops working after an over-the-air update, you will no longer be able to see essential instrument cluster readouts, warning lights, status symbols, or critical text messages. Driving with a non-operational instrument cluster can lead to severe accidents and fatal injuries.

  • Do not continue driving the vehicle under any circumstances. Please contact the SEAT customer care service or roadside assistance right away.

NOTICE If unauthorized or specialized modifications have been made to your Seat Leon outside the scope of factory specifications (such as conversions for emergency service response vehicles, driving school dual controls, or taxis), there is an inherent risk that specialized functions (like integrated taximeters or emergency radios) may no longer operate correctly after an over-the-air update.

  • Consult with your authorized SEAT dealer before performing any over-the-air updates if your vehicle has custom electrical equipment installed.

Note

  • Custom performance tuning or efficiency modifications (such as aftermarket engine remapping or ECU tuning) that were not factory-incorporated by SEAT may be overwritten, reset, or completely deleted following an over-the-air system update.
  • Depending on the specific equipment level and update package, release notes may appear on screen once before or after an over-the-air update is installed. These release notes outline changes made to vehicle software status. For detailed release notes and additional information regarding over-the-air updates, please visit the official website: www.seat.com
  • Over-the-air system updates will update core vehicle software modules but will not update third-party applications installed inside the infotainment system.
  • Certain identifying information, such as your vehicle identification number (VIN), is securely shared with the manufacturer to verify campaign eligibility and ensure each update installs successfully. These update packages always require your explicit final confirmation before installation begins.

If you prefer not to transmit diagnostic data for these updates, you can change your privacy settings to Seat Leon Incognito maximum privacy mode icon Incognito (maximum privacy) mode within the privacy and online services configuration menu in your car.

Prerequisites for an over-the-air update

The following technical prerequisites must be completely satisfied to allow software update packages to be downloaded via satellite or mobile data and installed onto your Seat Leon:

  • The over-the-air update function is fully supported and available in your current country of operation.
  • The vehicle is parked or driven in an area with sufficient mobile cellular network reception.
  • Your current privacy mode configuration permits the vehicle to transmit and receive necessary system data and information.
  • The vehicle's 12-volt starter battery is adequately charged.

Download and install an over-the-air update

Download costs

Over-the-air updates for your Seat Leon are downloaded via the factory-installed control unit equipped with an integrated eSIM card and are completely free of charge. SEAT covers all cellular data connection costs involved in downloading system files.

Download timing

The file download takes place automatically in the background without prior warning prompts, and can safely occur while driving your vehicle.

When the file download is fully completed, a pop-up notification will appear on the central screen to inform you that an over-the-air update is ready for installation.

Note The overall duration of the download process depends directly on cellular network quality, data file size, and the specific scope of the software update package. The download process may be temporarily interrupted if signal is lost, resuming automatically as soon as the ignition is switched on again.

Software installation pre-requisites

  • The vehicle must be parked safely on flat ground in full accordance with legal traffic requirements and local parking regulations.
  • All previous over-the-air updates must have been successfully downloaded and installed.

Installing the software from an over-the-air update

Select a convenient time to initiate the over-the-air update when neither you nor anyone else will need to drive or enter your Seat Leon for the duration of the installation process.

WARNING Vehicle electronic control units will be temporarily powered off and will not function while software installation is actively in progress. Attempting to drive while control units are powered down or malfunctioning can lead to catastrophic vehicle failure, severe accidents, and fatal injuries.

  • Schedule and install the software update in a safe location where the stationary vehicle will not obstruct or interfere with other road users.
  • Do not attempt to use, unlock, or operate the vehicle at any point during an ongoing software installation procedure.

1. Deactivate your Seat Leon's drive system completely, turn off the ignition, and engage the electronic parking brake securely.

2. Close the engine bonnet, luggage compartment tailgate, all power windows, and all passenger doors firmly.

3. Confirm and initiate the software installation sequence via the prompt on the Infotainment system touchscreen.

4. Ensure that all occupants get out of the car and that no children or animals remain inside the vehicle cabin.

5. Take all vehicle key fobs with you as you exit the cabin.

6. Lock the vehicle externally using the key fob or door sensors.

Functional restrictions during software installation

Electronic control units, the main central onboard computer, auxiliary functions, and all dashboard screens will remain completely unavailable while software installation takes place. Do not attempt to use the vehicle or access the Infotainment system during the update procedure.

  • The onboard vehicle system prevents any activation of the engine or electric drive system.
  • The high-voltage battery system will not charge if connected to a charging point.
  • The AUX-IN diagnostic connector port is switched off for security.
  • The factory anti-theft alarm system is temporarily deactivated.
  • The "Safe" interior deadlock security mechanism is switched off.

After installing the software

Following software installation and prior to restarting your Seat Leon's drive system, read the status confirmation message displayed on the Infotainment touchscreen or Digital Cockpit cluster regarding installation completion. It may take up to 1 minute for the vehicle systems to fully boot and display the updated over-the-air status.

  • The vehicle's drive system can be activated normally once the software installation has completed successfully.
  • If the software installation fails or does not complete successfully: refer to the Troubleshooting section below.

Troubleshooting

The installation of an over-the-air update has failed.

  • If an update package fails to install correctly, a clear error message will pop up on the infotainment system display or within the instrument cluster. Carefully observe and follow all corresponding messages, error codes, and warning instructions.

Note Control units may cease functioning or fail to operate properly in the event of a critical software installation error. Onboard functions, menus, and digital display screens will remain unavailable until the underlying installation error is resolved.

Do not attempt to drive the vehicle. Under these circumstances, please contact SEAT customer care or an authorized dealer immediately.

Can I interrupt the installation of an over-the- air update?

Interrupting an active installation is not possible once the sequence has been confirmed and initiated.

What happens if the installation of an over-the- air update is interrupted?

If an update installation is unexpectedly interrupted—for instance, due to a severe voltage drop or damage to your Seat Leon's electrical wiring—the affected control units may remain unupdated and inoperable due to incomplete software files.
