Seat Leon >> Steering
Information relating to different vehicle processes
To make your Seat Leon significantly more difficult to steal, always make it a habit to lock the steering wheel mechanism before leaving the vehicle cabin.
Steering
On Seat Leon models equipped with electromechanical power steering, steering assistance automatically adjusts in real-time according to your current driving speed, steering wheel torque input, and the precise orientation of the front wheels. Keep in mind that power steering assistance only functions when the engine is actively running.
If the power steering system suffers a malfunction or stops working completely, you will still be able to steer, but you will have to use substantially more physical strength than usual to turn the steering wheel.
Progressive steering
Depending on the specific trim level and equipment package of your Seat Leon, it may or may not incorporate an advanced progressive steering system.
When navigating tight city traffic, parking spaces, narrow manoeuvring areas, or sharp corners, progressive steering reduces the steering effort required, meaning you do not need to turn the wheel nearly as much.
Conversely, when driving at higher speeds on open roads or motorways—particularly through sweeping bends—progressive steering transmits a sportier, more direct, and noticeably more dynamic driving sensation.
Steering assist
This supportive safety feature assists the driver in critical dynamic situations. It provides subtle tactile torque recommendations on the steering wheel to guide the driver toward performing the correct corrective manoeuvre (counter-steering), turning slightly to help prevent skidding and maintain control.
WARNING Steering assist is designed solely to support the driver in critical situations.
The driver remains entirely responsible for controlling the vehicle's steering and trajectory at all times.
Troubleshooting
Steering fault
The warning lamp lights up red on the instrument cluster.
A severe fault has been detected in the electromechanical power steering system.
Stop driving immediately! Seek professional specialist assistance.- Do not allow the vehicle to be towed on its own wheels when a steering fault is active.
Steering fault
The control lamp lights up or flashes in yellow.
The steering feels noticeably stiffer or reacts much more sensitively than usual.
If the control lamp lights up and remains continuously lit:
- Restart the engine and drive slowly for a short distance to allow sensors to recalibrate. Contact a specialized workshop if the control lamp stays on.
- OR: If the 12-volt battery was recently disconnected and reconnected, drive slowly for a short distance to reset the steering angle sensor.
If the control lamp flashes:
- Turn the steering wheel slightly from lock to lock from one side to the other.
- Turn off the ignition completely and turn it on again.
- Carefully consider any supplementary warning messages shown on the instrument cluster display.
- If the control lamp continues flashing even after the ignition has been switched back on, do not continue driving. Seek specialist assistance.
