Seat Leon >> Inertia mode
The inertia (coasting) mode on your Seat Leon allows you to travel certain distances without using the accelerator pedal, which effectively saves fuel and reduces emissions. By planning ahead and utilizing inertia mode, you can allow the vehicle to coast smoothly.
Activation of the inertia mode
Combustion engine vehicles (excluding PHEVs and mHEVs):
- This efficiency function is only available when the "Eco" drive profile is selected, when your foot is completely off the accelerator pedal, and while travelling at speeds between 7 and 130 km/h (between 4 and 80 mph).
- If you press the brake pedal while driving below approximately 22 km/h (about 14 mph) with the intention of stopping, the engine may switch off and remain off until the Seat Leon comes to a complete halt. The system can also automatically restart the engine if necessary to ensure power is continuously supplied to the onboard electrical system or to prepare for a subsequent restart.
Mild hybrid electric vehicles (mHEV):
- On mHEV models, the inertia function is available when either the "Eco" or "Comfort" drive profile is selected, when the accelerator is unpressed, and across a wider speed range from 7 to 160 km/h (between 4 and 99 mph).
- If you apply the brakes and your Seat Leon slows to a stop below approximately 40 km/h (about 25 mph), the engine switches off completely until the vehicle comes to a standstill. The system may start the engine automatically to maintain electrical power supplies or ensure smooth startup readiness.
- If you press the brake while in inertia mode to stop from speeds above approximately 40 km/h (about 25 mph), inertia mode will be interrupted immediately and the engine will restart.
- When coming to a stop without applying the brakes, the engine will automatically restart at very low speed to facilitate easy manoeuvring.
Start and cancel inertia mode
Start:
1. Select the "Eco" drive profile via the driving mode settings.
Alternatively, on mHEV models, select the "Comfort" drive profile.
2. Lift your foot completely off the accelerator pedal. The engine will disengage from the transmission and run at idle speed. The Seat Leon will coast freely without any traditional engine braking effect.
The combustion engine may switch off entirely in vehicles equipped with an mHEV mild hybrid system.
Cancelling inertia mode:
1. Depress the accelerator pedal.
Alternatively, pull either of the automatic gear shift paddles towards the steering wheel to override coasting.
WARNING
- When inertia mode is active, always take into account when approaching an obstacle or slower traffic that your Seat Leon will not decelerate in the usual manner due to the lack of engine braking: High accident risk!
- When using inertia mode while travelling down hills or gradients, the vehicle can pick up speed rapidly: High accident risk!
- If other family members or unfamiliar drivers operate your vehicle, always warn them beforehand about the behavior of inertia mode.
NOTICE The operation of inertia mode in combination with hybrid powertrains (such as mHEV) can cause the combustion engine to shut down frequently during coasting phases.
NOTICE Inertia mode will be automatically disconnected by the management system on steep road gradients exceeding 15%.
