Fuel consumption, environmental pollution, and routine wear on the engine, brakes, and tyres all depend heavily on your personal driving habits. By adopting an efficient, forward-thinking driving style in your Seat Leon, you can cut fuel usage by 10% to 15%. The following guidance outlines practical ways to lessen your environmental impact while simultaneously lowering overall vehicle running costs.

Active cylinder management (ACT)

Depending on the specific engine fitted to your Seat Leon, active cylinder management (ACT) can automatically deactivate two of the engine cylinders when power demand is low, such as during steady cruising. The instrument cluster display clearly shows the current number of active cylinders so you can monitor when the system is operating in its eco-friendly state.

Anticipation when driving

Looking far down the road allows you to anticipate traffic flow, requiring fewer sudden braking maneuvers and subsequent accelerations. Whenever safe, roll momentum forward with a gear engaged to harness engine braking. This approach reduces wear on brake pads and tyres while cutting fuel consumption and tailpipe emissions down to zero during overrun.

Changing gear to save energy

Shifting up to a higher gear early is one of the easiest ways to boost fuel efficiency across daily journeys in your Seat Leon.

Manual gearbox: move out of first gear into second as soon as the car is moving. Selecting the highest gear appropriate for current road conditions keeps engine speed low and smooth while preserving steady acceleration.

Automatic transmission: press the accelerator smoothly and steadily, avoiding aggressive throttle inputs that trigger downshifts or activate the "kick-down" switch.

Avoid driving at high speed

Try to avoid running at top vehicle speeds whenever possible. Aerodynamic drag increases dramatically as speed rises, causing fuel consumption, exhaust emissions, and road noise to escalate rapidly. Maintaining steady, moderate speeds keeps your Seat Leon operating in its most economical range.

Reduce idling time

Models equipped with the Start-Stop system automatically switch off the engine when stationary to eliminate unnecessary idling. If your car does not have this feature, turning off the engine manually at railway crossings or extended red lights makes practical sense. Once the engine is up to normal operating temperature, switching it off for as little as 5 seconds saves more fuel than the small amount required to restart it.

Idling while stationary is an inefficient way to warm up a cold engine, leading to higher initial wear and increased emissions during the warm-up phase. The best practice is to drive off smoothly right after starting the engine, taking care to avoid high revs until the powertrain reaches proper operating temperatures.

Regular maintenance

Keeping up with scheduled servicing pays off before you even turn the key. A properly maintained engine runs cleaner and uses fuel far more efficiently, while protecting long-term reliability and market resale value. Conversely, neglecting routine maintenance can increase fuel consumption by up to 10% under normal driving conditions.

Avoid short journeys

Both the engine and the catalytic converter in your Seat Leon need to reach their optimal operating temperature to keep fuel consumption and tailpipe emissions as low as possible.

A cold engine burns a disproportionate amount of fuel during the initial warm-up phase. Under typical driving conditions, the engine requires roughly four kilometres (2.5 miles) to reach its full working temperature, after which fuel consumption drops back down to its normal level.

Check tyre pressure

Keeping your tyres inflated to the manufacturer's recommended pressures is one of the easiest ways to save fuel in your Seat Leon. Running on tyres that are just half a bar below the target pressure can increase fuel consumption by up to 5%. Beyond wasting fuel, the added rolling resistance accelerates tread wear and degrades overall vehicle handling and stability.

Avoid driving on winter tyres year-round, as their softer rubber compound and tread design can raise fuel consumption by up to 10% in warmer weather.

Avoid carrying unnecessary loads

Because every extra kilogram carried in your Seat Leon forces the engine to work harder, clearing out unnecessary cargo from the boot and cabin yields immediate fuel savings.

Roof racks and luggage carriers significantly increase aerodynamic drag. Removing them when they are not actively in use can save up to 12% on fuel when travelling at highway speeds between 100 and 120 km/h (62 to 75 mph).

Save electrical energy

The engine powers the alternator to produce electrical energy, meaning higher electrical demand directly increases fuel consumption. Turning off high-draw equipment when it isn't needed—such as the climate control blower running on maximum speed, heated seats, or the heated rear window—helps conserve fuel during everyday drives.

If your Seat Leon is equipped with a plug-in hybrid drive, braking early and smoothly allows the regenerative system to harvest kinetic energy and store it back in the high-voltage battery.

Note

  • If your vehicle features the Start-Stop system, keeping it active is recommended to cut idling losses in heavy traffic.
  • Closing the side windows when driving above 60 km/h (37 mph) improves aerodynamics and reduces wind drag.
  • Avoid resting your foot on the clutch pedal while driving, as light pressure can cause the clutch plate to slip, accelerating wear and risking permanent damage.
  • Do not hold the car stationary on an incline by slipping the clutch; use the foot brake or electronic parking brake instead to prevent clutch damage and reduce fuel burn.
  • Take advantage of engine braking on steep downhill stretches by shifting into an appropriate lower gear. This cuts fuel flow down to zero while preserving your service brakes from overheating.
